Woman jumps to death from Jaipur metro station

JAIPUR: A 30-year-old woman jumped to her death from the railing of platform No. 2 of the elevated Ram Nagar Metro station here on Friday night. CCTV camera footage of the platform showed a train’s driver rushing to rescue the woman just before she jumped off and fell on a road around 80 feet below.

Sodala police said Bharati Patel, a native of Damoh district in Madhya Pradesh, had been living in the city’s Mahesh Nagar for the past 18 months. Constable Raghunath Choudhary, who was patrolling with his colleague Sohan Lal, said around 9.30pm he heard a loud thud.

Woman was talking to her friend using earphones

Constable Raghunath Choudhary, who was patrolling with his colleague Sohan Lal, said around 9.30pm he heard a loud thud and saw the woman lying on the road below the Metro station.

“Initially, we heard she was pushed offthe platform. We immediately directed that all entry and exit gates be shut,” Choudhary told TOI, adding that Sodala police ferried the woman to SMS Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at 12.17am.

Police found her mobile phone with its screen completely smashed and connected to earphones. Preliminary investigation indicated that the woman was talking to her friend using earphones. “She was hastily moving around on the platform while talking over the phone. A train had just arrived and its pilot found that something was suspicious. He rushed out to help her but she jumped off,” said an official who did not wish to be named.

Deceased’s father Hari Shankar said Bharti was married to a Delhi-based man but they had separated. She had earlier worked with a surgical firm and recently took up a computer course. She had also befriended a 33-year-old person in Jaipur and both met frequently. Sodala SHO Satpal Singh said the body was handed over to the family after postmortem and they did not file any case against anyone.
