Woman jumps from car, lets it crash into unit block to avoid RBT: police

Highway patrol police tried to breath test the woman before the crash. File picture

A WOMAN allegedly jumped from a moving car as she tried to escape police breath testing, letting the vehicle crash into a Hunter unit block.

Highway patrol police were on Chelmsford Drive at Metford just after 8.30pm on Monday when they attempted to stop a driver for a random breath test.

Police allege the woman behind the wheel failed to pull over and officers launched a pursuit.

A short time later, the woman allegedly leapt from the vehicle on Wakehurst Crescent, while it was still moving.

The car continued on and crashed into a unit complex on the same street, causing damage to the external framework.

A water pipe burst in the ordeal, which caused flooding internally.

No one was reported injured, according to police.

The 41-year-old woman police allege was the driver was arrested nearby after a short foot chase.

She was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly; and driving while disqualified.

The woman spent the night in police custody after she was refused bail.

She will face Maitland Local Court on the charges for the first time today.
