A woman has hit out after her husband 'banned' the whole family from getting a Chinese takeaway after he made changes to his own diet. The mum said her partner recently had to go gluten-free, which meant he was not able to indulge in his favourite dishes.
She claimed he said it would be cruel for the others to continue eating a takeaway without him and branded it "totally unacceptable" that they would consider doing it. The woman thought he was joking, but her partner confirmed he was deadly serious.
The befuddled woman took to Mumsnet to find out if others thought it would be unfair if she didn't go along with her husband's demands.
Posting on the Am I Being Unreasonable forum, she wrote: "We all love a Chinese takeaway in our house - we have three teenagers.
"A couple of months ago my husband had to go gluten-free. Chinese takeaway is limited in terms of gluten-free options so he’s said he’d rather not bother- fair enough his choice. He’s now said nobody else in the house can get one as it’s cruel. He adored Cantonese chicken balls and chicken chow mien.
"I thought he was joking , but he’s not. He has seriously said that it’s totally unacceptable and unfair for anyone to get a Chinese takeaway. Am I being unreasonable?"
Readers were quick to comment on the man's new household rules. One person said: "He needs to learn to cook a Chinese Fakeaway for himself and try living in the real world!"
Another wrote: "Well, he‘s unreasonable to categorically state none of you can have Chinese, but it would be pretty mean of you all to sit and regularly eat it in front of him knowing he can‘t have it and really misses it.
"Can‘t you find a compromise and either find some dishes he can eat or maybe try and find another takeaway that he can eat and that you all like?"
Whilst another added: "It’s a shame for him, but he’s being very selfish to outlaw Chinese food for the household. I’d never dream of telling people what they could and couldn’t eat."
Someone else said: "He's being ridiculous, and self-centred. I've not been able to get Chinese takeout since Coeliac diagnosis and it was my favourite food ever. I'm not stopping anyone else from getting it. I've even picked it up for them."
