Authorities in Japan have arrested 32-year-old Mayu Yoshida, a restaurant worker from Osaka, for allegedly orchestrating an unprecedented campaign of digital disruption of merchandize worth $2.7 million. Over roughly two years, Yoshida allegedly targeted the logistics systems of Japan’s largest manga publisher, Shueisha Inc., which publishes beloved properties like Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece and many others.
Authorities believe Yoshida was placing and then abruptly canceling thousands of online merchandise orders. According to The Straits Times, her alleged actions effectively paralyzed the publisher’s retail operations by locking up billions of yen worth of merchandise.
