Woman enjoys Italy day trip, paying just £52 for flights, wine, food and souvenirs

A woman has expressed her delight at being able to visit Italy for the day at a cost of just £52.

Katie, from Kildare, Ireland decided to treat herself to a trip to Pisa, after realising that stopping off there would save her £162 on her journey home.

After flying from Dublin to visit her long-distance partner in Malta, she soon noticed it would be significantly cheaper to change flights in Italy, rather than return to Ireland directly.

So, instead of paying £214 for the single-flight privilege, Katie paid just over £50, with the five-hour gap to her connecting flight allowing her time to roam the city, drink wine and purchase souvenirs.

She even enjoyed a freshly baked pizza a stone's throw from Pisa's iconic leaning tower, meanwhile.

Utilising Ryanair's flights, Katie even made it home in time for work the next day.

She explained to the Sun: "I was visiting my long-distance boyfriend in Malta. A flight from Malta to Dublin cost more than €250 (£214).

"But flying from Malta to Pisa and staying for five hours to see the leaning tower, eat pizza and then fly back to Dublin was cheaper."

It's not the first time Katie has stopped off in other countries to save cash.

She continued: "I’ve done this a few times via the UK from Spain to Ireland It's cheaper than going to Dublin for the day, which is one of the most expensive cities in Europe."

Breaking down her spend, meanwhile, Katie said the flight from Malta to Pisa cost just £12.87. There she spent £10.74 on wine and pizza, £1.72 on fridge magnets, £1.29 on water and £8.59 on a return train ticket from the airport to the city centre.

Her flight from Pisa to Dublin cost £17.18, bringing the day's total expenditure to £52.39.

It comes after three sisters headed to Dublin for just five and a half hours on a night out after bagging £25 return Ryanair tickets while out in a bar.

Brogan Moore, 24, who works in customer services, from Huddersfield, was accompanied by her two sisters Amelia and Isabel, who are both 19 and work as cabin crew, on a spontaneous night out in the Irish capital last month.

The three of them caught their flight from Leeds Bradford Airport at 8.25pm in their outfits before trudging back to the airport at 4am am to get their 6am am flight home.

Brogan said: "It was so worth it. I'd give the night out an easy nine out of ten, and it's definitely something we'd all do again. We left our house at half six in the evening and arrived in the centre of Dublin at 10.30pm - it was a very heavy night."
