A woman has died after a crash that shut the M1 for several hours. Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the M1 after a report that a black Ford Mondeo came off the motorway and hit a tree between junctions 21a and 22 shortly before 10.45am on Sunday, May 8.
The occupants – a male driver and female passenger – were taken to hospital and the road was closed for several hours. The passenger, in her 30s, died as a result of her injuries yesterday evening, police have confirmed
Police have said the driver remains in hospital in a stable condition. Detective Constable Charlotte Wright, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Leicestershire Police, said: “Sadly our inquiries are now centred around a fatal collision.

“While we have spoken to a number of people, I would still ask that anyone who was travelling on the motorway yesterday morning and saw what happened or who has dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
