A 40-year-old woman who was struck by a vehicle four months ago in an alleged hit-and-run crash near Darwin has died from her injuries.
The woman had remained in hospital with critical injuries since July 12, when she was hit by a vehicle on the Stuart Highway in Berrimah, about 12 kilometres south of Darwin.
The alleged offender is a teenage learner driver, who was charged at the time with driving unsupervised as well as being under the influence of alcohol.
Northern Territory Police released a statement on Monday confirming the woman had died overnight from her injuries.
In the statement, NT Police said major crash detectives were continuing to investigate the fatal incident after charging the driver involved on July 13.
"The alleged offender, who was a youth at the time, remains before the court," Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.
"He is facing numerous charges, which will be upgraded in due course as a result of the death."
The number of lives lost on Northern Territory roads this year remains at 47, according to the statement from police.
Deaths occurring more than 30 days after a road crash are not included in the statistics, a police spokesperson said, in accordance with national guidelines.
