Woman dead and two kids in hospital after car enters water on Cork city quay

A woman has died and two kids are being treated in hospital after a car entered the River Lee in Cork city on Friday night.

Emergency services were called to Kennedy Quay shortly before 9pm last night where a car had just entered the river.

Two kids managed to escape and were rescued but a search continued for a woman who was believed to be trapped inside the vehicle.

The Rescue 117 helicopter joined the search and the woman was found dead a short time later.

Gardai have launched a full investigation into the incident and are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of an incident where a vehicle entered the River Lee at Kennedy Quay, Cork City, at approximately 8:45pm on Friday, 3rd June, 2022.

"Two children were recovered from the water and are currently receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital for non-life threatening injuries."
