A woman in Texas has been charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child after an incident at an apartment complex pool. The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has identified the family involved as Muslim and Palestinian.
The incident occurred on May 19 at an apartment complex pool in Euless, Texas. Witnesses reported that a woman, later identified as Elizabeth Wolf, attempted to drown a 3-year-old child and made racial statements towards the child's mother, who was visibly Muslim and wearing a hijab.
According to reports, Wolf questioned the mother about her background and made derogatory remarks. She then allegedly tried to grab the mother's 6-year-old son before forcibly submerging the 3-year-old daughter underwater. The mother was able to rescue her daughter, who was coughing up water and required medical attention.
Wolf was arrested by Euless Police Department officers for public intoxication. She has since posted bail for the charges of attempted capital murder and injury to a child. The incident has sparked calls for a hate crime investigation and increased measures to protect the Muslim family and community.
The victim's mother expressed fear for her family's safety, stating that her daughter is traumatized by the incident. Community leaders and lawmakers have condemned the act, emphasizing that hate has no place in their town or state.
Efforts are underway to address the rise in Islamophobia, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian sentiments. Calls have been made for a thorough investigation and dialogue with officials to combat such acts of discrimination and violence.
