Woman accuses pal of 'betrayal' after leaving her abroad to be with her husband

A woman has been accused of "betraying" her friend after leaving her in a foreign country to be with her new fiancé.

Angie*, 45, had been planning a getaway with her pals Cathy, 62, and Lisa, 45, for several months, with Cathy gearing up to take a plane for the first time in her life.

Having got the trip booked in, Lisa had to pull out of the last night's stay because her work refused to grant all the required time off.

"Months went by, and during this time I met my new fiancé," Angie wrote on a Reddit thread.

"Two days before the scheduled holiday, my fiancé encountered a serious problem and needed my assistance (specifically on the weds evening).

"He asked me to come back a day early, and we searched for an alternative solution but couldn't figure out any other way to resolve his problem that didn't involve cutting my holiday short or him losing a lot of money.

"He was really stressed out and worried and the problem was costing him a lot of money with each passing day."

Not wanting her new beau to be too stressed or lose too much cash, Angie decided to leave the holiday a day early.

"When I informed Cathy that she would be alone for the last night and half day and return flight, she got really upset," Angie continued.

"Cathy basically said that she didn't want to go on the trip any longer because her being alone for one night wasn't part of the deal She demanded that I reimburse her non refundable tickets.

"I said that was out of the question, that I owed her nothing and nothing would prevent her from enjoying this long awaited trip, it was just a minor detail that she would be alone the last day.

"The fact that I was leaving early had no financial consequences for her, as I was still paying for my share of the Airbnb as agreed even though I wouldn't be staying there the last night."

Despite Angie's conviction that "Cathy is a grown woman and there was no reason for me to be concerned about 'abandoning' her", relations are not well between the two women.

"My fiancé resolved his problem and I was there for a crucial part of that, I'm not sorry for cutting my holiday short, it was unfortunate but not a catastrophe," she wrote.

"Despite the relatively good outcome, there is now a strain on my relationship with Cathy. It's been two weeks now and she still brings up my 'betrayal' and berates my choices in front of her children and other friends."

Angie turned to the world of Reddit to test the waters on whether she was in the wrong.

The answer was mostly that yes, she was.

"So you had this trip planned, and during the months leading up to your trip, you MET someone and now you're ENGAGED," one person stormed.

"Then he has some emergency pop up- but two days in advance -that ONLY YOU can help with.

"This entire story is bonkers, yeah of course your friend is mad. You put someone you've known for a matter of months over a long time friendship."

Another added: "I am highly sceptical that the issue with your fiancé is legit to be honest. How convenient that he had a massive problem that could only be resolved by you?"

A third wrote: "Yes she is an adult and made it home fine but having never travelled and being 62 it’s fairly easy to see that she was probably a nervous wreck through the whole experience.

"Even though it turned out fine it was likely not a fun vacation for her and she probably was more stressed traveling than she’d have been had she just stayed home. I can see why she’s salty about it."
