If you've ever been hangry and craving a takeaway, you'll know the lengths you'll go to in order to secure the bag of tasty goodies. That's why one 90-year-old woman has become somewhat of a local legend after she became stranded whilst driving thanks to a pothole, but that wasn't going to stop her from getting the kebab she wanted.
Kath Cains, 90, and her daughter Jill Hireson, 61, were driving to a local restaurant in near Bitton for lunch when their front tyres were blown out by a pothole. As well as being annoyed about the damage to the car, the two women were seriously hungry as their meal reservation slipped past.
They called the AA and had a genius idea to address their rumbling stomachs - a takeaway, delivered to their car, while they waited for rescue.
They used a local cottage's postcode for the delivery of pizza, chicken, chips, and homemade coleslaw from First Choice Kebab Shop.
Jill says that the pothole was "so large it felt like a ditch" when they hit it, leaving her 90-year-old mother without food or anywhere to go to the toilet.
She added: "We had been driving along at a perfectly normal speed when we hit the potholes. It blew out both of my front tyres, which left us stranded.
''It was one of those weird situations where I just had to make the most of what could have been a bad situation. Thankfully despite all being hungry, we were able to order some food.
''It was a very interesting conversation [with the delivery driver], but they found us and were very friendly and helpful."
Due to Kath's age, AA was able to get a repair technician to them after just over an hour of being stranded.
After Kath was picked up by Jill's son, Jill's car was repaired at a nearby garage in Keynsham where she got the two tyres replaced and balanced for £200.
Jill added: "The road is terrible for the potholes and I wanted to warn other motorists. Speaking to someone on the road, they said it was down to years of the council patching up the problem without sorting it out for the long term.
"The potholes wrecked my car and left us in a difficult situation. Thankfully, the AA were fabulous and we were able to get food out to us. But I wouldn’t want others to face the same thing."
Data from the Department for Transport suggest it will take South Gloucestershire Council 742 years to repair its crumbling roads and potholes.
A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: "This time of year is traditionally busy in terms of repairing potholes as the cold and wet weather over the winter months takes its toll on our road surfaces.
"We repair around 11,000 potholes a year, although it is difficult to provide an exact number as repairs may include multiple potholes under one job.
"We have filled 17% more potholes since the start of January compared to this time last year."
