Woman, 70s, killed in Cork crash after being hit by a lorry on town's main street

An elderly woman was killed in a horror crash in Cork involving a lorry on Monday afternoon.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was walking on the main street in Charleville at around 3.45pm when she was hit by the lorry and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The lorry driver was uninjured in the collision.

Gardai have closed the road and are appealing to witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

This is the second serious collision on the Charleville main street in weeks.

A garda spokesperson said on Monday: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 3:45pm on Monday, 15th May 2023 on Main Street, Charleville, County Cork.

"The female pedestrian (70s) has been pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries to persons have been reported.

"The road at Main Street, Charleville, is currently closed and the services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested. Local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Main Street area of Charleville between 3:30pm and 4:00pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Last month, a man was killed when he was struck by a truck when crossing the same road. The town's Main Street is frequently used as one of the main transport routes from Cork to Galway and Donegal with large trucks travelling through the town every day.

Locals have described Main Street as "lethal", after a number of crashes and fatal incidents on the street in recent years.
