Woman, 37, dies just hours into Benidorm holiday with wife after tragic accident

A woman died hours into a Benidorm holiday with wife after a tragic accident.

Marie Riley could not be saved after an incident on Monday which shocked friends who sent wishes to her partner..

Lynne, her devastated wife, informed friends and family on social media sparking an outpouring of comments from friends and family.

The pair, who had been married for four years, flew to Spain with friends on Monday.

Tributes were paid to Marie from Paisley, Renfrewshire on Facebook who friends described as "a beautiful lassie" and "genuinely one in a million".

The Daily Record reports pal Megan Smith was devastated by the news.

She said: "Lynne I am in complete shock. I am so so sorry. One of the loveliest girls I’ve ever met. Please let us know if you need anything at all."

Ronetta Adams added: "Life is so cruel Lynne, take each day as it comes and look after yourself, you have great family and friends who will help you through this tragedy.

"Our thoughts are with you all xx sleep tight Marie you will be sadly missed xx."

May Pollock wrote: "So sorry to hear about Marie, she was an amazing person ,will never forget her , thinking of you, we are here if you need anything at all xx."

And Savannah Boreman noted: "Love you to the moon and back Lynne, I am still shocked beyond words but we’ll all be here when you get home."

Neighbour Charlene Mullen, who lives next to the couple, said in a post addressed to Marie: "We started as neighbours and grew to become best friends.

"The laughter, jokes & sometimes cries we shared around the garden fire will live with me forever.

"I cannot believe I will never see you again.

"I am absolutely devastated for your wife.

"We will love you forever. Rest easy beautiful."

The Record said it had contacted Spain's Policia Nacional for comment on the support it is providing to the family in the tourist town, a favourite of those seeking sunnier climes.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are assisting the family of a British woman following an incident in Benidorm and in contact with the Spanish authorities."
