Wolves Sack Gary O'Neil Following Ipswich Town Defeat

Wolves have officially parted ways with Gary O’Neil following Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Ipswich Town at Molineux.

After suffering four consecutive defeats in the Premier League, Wolves have officially sacked head coach Gary O’Neil and his coaching staff.

The Old Gold have managed two victories, three draws and 11 losses in the league under O’Neil this term, leaving them in 19th place in the table, five points adrift of safety.

His exit comes less than 24 hours after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to relegation rivals Ipswich Town, in which Rayan Ait-Nouri had to be manhandled off the pitch by Craig Dawson after receiving a red card in the dying moments.

Wolves are reportedly in talks with Al Shabab manager Vitor Pereira to replace O’Neil at Molineux, with the Portuguese boss keen on making a move to the Black Country.

Wolves Sack Gary O’Neil

The West Midlands club confirmed O’Neil’s departure in a club statement on Sunday afternoon.

“Wolves have parted company with head coach Gary O’Neil and his backroom staff,” the statement read.

“O’Neil arrived at Molineux just three days before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, taking on a significant challenge and ultimately guiding the Old Gold to a successful campaign.

“During his first season at the helm, Wolves beat Manchester City and won impressively at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as rivals West Bromwich Albion during a journey to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

“Chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.””

Wolves return to Premier League action next Sunday when they head to the King Power to take on Leicester City, with the UK’s best football betting sites narrowly favouring the Foxes to come out on top at home.
