A general view of Molineux - (Liverpool FC via Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Wolverhampton Wanderers face Ipswich Town today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

It’s all over at Molineux and a last-gasp goal from Jack Taylor means all three points will be going back home with the away team. The game started in a naturally cagey fashion, with fouls going in all over the pitch. Once some football was able to be played, it didn't take long for Ipswich to open the scoring. Delap worked hard on the right to set up Hutchinson for a shot only a few yards out, which he made a mess of. The follow-up shot after the ball was cleared off the line came in from Chaplin, and after two deflections the ball rolled into the Wolves net. Wolves woke up after that, and their continual press was finally rewarded in the 72nd minute when substitute Guedes rolled a ball through to Cunha, who shot beyond Muric at his near post. That made the score level, and as the game trundled on towards the 90-minute mark, it looked like that would be that. However, the goals weren’t done just yet and Ipswich earned a corner in the 94th minute which Jack Clarke whipped in perfectly towards the back post. Two subs combined as Taylor rose highest at the back post before heading past Johnstone to win it for Ipswich. That goal sent the crowd and players alike into bedlam before the final whistle was blown. Tensions and emotions ran wild after the final whistle, with multiple Wolves players needing to be dragged off the pitch due to their outbursts. It’s worrying times at Wolves, but Ipswich will be delighted with their second win of the season against fellow strugglers. Wolves created 0.94 xG across the game, whereas Ipswich created 1.26 xG and it paid off for them as they ran away as winners. Thank you for joining this live text commentary, goodbye!

GOOOOOOALLLL!!!! IPSWICH HAVE DONE IT! Jack Taylor has fired Ipswich ahead at the death and he’s surely won them all three points. He met a corner at the back post, and directed his header brilliantly past Johnstone, and into the right side of the goal. 2-1 to Ipswich! WOW!

There is one minute to go! Do either of the teams have it in them to win this game!?

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:51

There will be three added minutes. Here we go!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:51

Davis goes down inside the box and claims a push in the back, with Simon Hooper waving away the claim straight away. The VAR checked and cleared the incident very quickly.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:48

We are getting closer to the 90-minute mark now. Can either of these sides find a goal in such crucial circumstances?

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:47

Wolves are really going for it now, they’ve had a few opportunities amidst the substitutions as Cunha had two efforts. One was saved by Muric, and the second he hit over the bar. Then shortly after, Doyle had a couple of shots himself from outside the box.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:45

Al-Hamadi is on for Ipswich in another change for the away team. He is replacing Delap in attack for the remaining minutes of this game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:44

Substitution Wesley James Burns Benjamin Anthony Johnson

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:42

This really is an end-to-end game now. As soon as one team loses the ball, the other is straight into attack, making for fantastic viewing! Ipswich had a corner which was cleared and Wolves didn't think twice before sprinting forward.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:39

Cunha whipped a tidy ball into Strand Larsen, and he did really well to connect with an inventive shot, but it was saved at Muric’s near post.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:37

The changes from both sides suggest that the managers are throwing the kitchen sink at this game. It will be attacking football until the final whistle now, and Wolves are still riding the wave after their goal. Don’t take your eyes off this game!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:35

Substitution Conor Mark Chaplin Jack Henry Philip Taylor

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:34

Substitution Jens-Lys Michel Cajuste Jack Raymond Clarke

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:34

Hee-Chan has come into the action to add more attacking firepower to the Wolves side. He replaces Bellegarde in an attacking switch.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:34

GOOOOAL! Wolves are level! That has been coming from the home team, and they have drawn level through Cunha! Guedes links up with him brilliantly, and Cunha fired a left-footed shot past Muric at his near post. 1-1!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:32

Boo’s are starting to ring out around the ground now. The Wolves fans are getting very impatient after 70 minutes of bad football.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:31

Wolves came forward again, but Bellegarde passed the ball into an area where not a single Wolves player was. They are not on the same wavelength at the moment, and it’s really showing in this game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:28

Wolves had a really nice opening to try and make a chance, but Ait-Nouri took far too long to let go of the ball instead of playing Guedes in for a shot.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:27

Wolves have 25 minutes or so to potentially save their season. They can’t let teams around them pull away, otherwise the task of survival is going to get much harder.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:24

Wolves make another substitution as Gary O’Neil rolls the dice once more. Guedes is coming on to replace Doherty, who scored the own goal in this game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:22

Yellow Card Harrison Thomas Clarke

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:20

WHAT A MISS!! Delap has missed an opportunity to kill the game off! Burns gets in behind on the right side and looks to pick out Delap in the middle, but he lifts the ball rather than playing it on the floor. Delap made a mess of the shot, and it went wide. It’s still 1-0!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:18

Cunha is down on the ground and looks to be in a lot of pain with his finger. The medical team ran on and popped the finger back into place, and he is now getting it taped up on the sideline. That looked painful.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:17

This game has become an end-to-end affair, with both teams feeling as if they need to get the next goal, for very different reasons of course.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:15

Wolves have another corner, which takes them to three for the game. Doyle crosses in and it's a better delivery than the ones before but Ipswich eventually clear.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:14

Hutchinson very nearly broke through the Wolves backline, but Bueno did well to keep up with him and make the tackle after a bad touch from the Ipswich man.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:12

Wolves keep coming, and they look as though they are trying to equalise quickly here. They don’t want to lose again and can sense some weakness in the Ipswich side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:09

GREAT SAVE! Burns struck from the right side of the box, and the shot was heading for the left corner of the goal. Johnstone stuck an arm out and got a big hand to the ball to save and keep the scoreline 1-0.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:08

Wolves have started the second half well and have got themselves an early corner. This gives Ipswich something to think about, but Muric came and collected with ease.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:05

KICK-OFF! The second half is under way at Molineux, and what a big half this could be for both teams!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

16:04

Substitution André Trindade da Costa Neto Thomas Glyn Doyle

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:57

Looking to the second half, Wolves need to get a hold of their emotions before they can focus on the football. They have been far too feisty to play a good game of football, and their emotions are getting the better of them. If they can get them under control, they can begin to work on the Ipswich defence. For Ipswich, they need to keep doing the same as the first half. They are doing well and are ahead due to their persistent efforts. They will more than likely need an insurance goal, as they know from their recent game against Bournemouth, but they are in a good spot at the break.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:55

It’s been a feisty 45 minutes here at Molineux and only one goal separates the two sides as they head into the break. The game has been a cagey affair for a large amount of the first half, and it has impacted the flow of the game because of the amount of stoppages. Ipswich pulled ahead in the 15th minute after a quiet opening period, and it was a very comical goal that they scored. Hutchinson failed to score from a few yards out, and after a goal-line clearance, Chaplin’s shot was deflected by two Wolves players before rolling over Johnstone’s line to make it 1-0 to the away side. Wolves had a great chance to equalise shortly after, but Bellegarde shot over the bar from inside the box. There has been a VAR check for violent conduct, and you can expect more cards in the second half as this game comes to a boil. Opta’s live win probability shows a 17.% chance of a Wolves win, 27.2% for a draw, and 55.3% for an Ipswich Town win. So far, Wolves have created 0.26 xG and Ipswich have created 0.61 xG.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:49

HALF-TIME: WOLVES 0-1 IPSWICH TOWN

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:49

Ipswich have done well to not rise to any of Wolves’ childish actions, and they have one of the home side’s key players on a booking through no fault of their own.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:47

There will be three added minutes.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:47

The first card of the game has now been given out to Ait-Nouri after a foul on Burns moments after their coming together. That’s a pretty ridiculous card to get at a crucial time in the season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:45

Ait-Nouri and Burns come face-to-face and things get a bit heated on the touchline. Simon Hooper is talking to them both, but no further punishment has been given.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:43

The incident has been checked and cleared, and the game has resumed again.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:43

The VAR is checking for violent conduct after Bueno has dropped to the ground in the middle of the pitch!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:43

The game has plateaued a bit, as Wolves’ attacks have slowed down. Ipswich are happy to keep the ball when they have it, resulting in a quiet period of the game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:37

Chaplin is back in the action now as he has walked off the injury. The score remains 1-0 to Ipswich thanks to a Doherty own goal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:36

Chaplin is down injured, and he has now temporarily left the pitch to receive some treatment.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:35

Wolves get their first shot on target from Strand Larsen after a nice bit of work by Ait-Nouri to play him in. The shot was poor in the end, and it was saved well by Muric.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:34

CLOSE! Cunha did really well to get in behind Hutchinson and break into the box. He hit a low pass across the face of the goal, but Lemina couldn’t get there in time and Ipswich cleared the danger. Much better from Wolves, however.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:33

Toti swept a brilliant ball inside the Ipswich box, but Muric did extremely well to come out and claim the ball with a punch out. He has been under more pressure as of late, and that will settle some nerves.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:31

Cunha reacts very angrily towards Simon Hooper after a foul was given against him. Again, the referee lets it go without a card. Wolves are a very emotional side at the moment, especially after the outburst against West Ham.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:28

Wolves have woken up now. They are coming forward at every opportunity and have found confidence even after that miss from Bellegarde. They now look likely to equalise!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:26

WHAT A MISS! Bellegarde has just missed a crucial chance to bring Wolves level! They pounced on the ball inside the Ipswich half, and Lemina unselfishly played Bellegarde inside the box. He just had to hit the target, but he blazed over from close range!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:25

Ipswich come forward again, but the final ball was poor and cleared everyone inside the box. Ait-Nouri collected on the opposite side and tried to break forward, but nothing came from it.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:23

Ipswich definitely have their tails up now, and Wolves already look defeated! Their passing is slow and inaccurate, whereas Ipswich look lively and as if they want to add to their opener soon.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:20

It’s baffling how Simon Hooper hasn’t given a card out yet! There have been so many fouls already in this game, and some that are normally worthy of bookings.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:19

Delap did so well there for that goal, he carries the ball so well with such strength and power. He deserved an assist there, with Hutchinson making a hash of his chance.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:16

Own goal Matthew James Doherty

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:14

Delap goes down inside the box, and the away fans call for a penalty, as he drives well down the left side. It looked like a push, but the VAR checked and cleared the incident very quickly.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:12

Hutchinson lofts a cross into the area, and Johnstone flaps at the ball under no pressure and only manages to half-clear the ball. Luckily for him, Clarke couldn’t stretch to get the ball and it was cleared.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:11

Ipswich have the first corner of the game, after a period of sustained pressure inside the Wolves half. They will be nervous trying to defend set-pieces, given their terrible record from them.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:08

Doherty has committed two fouls in the same amount of minutes, it could already be said that he’s walking a slight tightrope and he’ll have to be careful not to be booked.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:07

It has been an edgy start here at Molineux, which was to be expected between these two. Neither side has created a meaningful sight at goal yet.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:04

There have already been a few unsavoury challenges going in and around the centre circle. Simon Hooper might be a busy man today in this high-stakes game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

15:01

KICK-OFF! Simon Hooper blows his whistle for the first time here, and the game is under way!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

14:58

The teams are out on the pitch, and we’re nearly ready for kick-off here in Wolverhampton!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

14:53

Wolves have had a change of captain after the post-match shenanigans of Lemina against West Ham, with Semedo being given the armband on a permanent basis. Both of them start here as Gary O’Neil makes only one change to his starting lineup. That change sees Joao Gomes drop out through injury, with Bellegarde replacing him in the attacking midfielder spot. For Ipswich, a few changes have been made after their loss to Bournemouth. Clarke is back in the starting lineup to replace Johnson, Cajuste comes back into the midfield, meaning Taylor drops to the bench and Burns replaces Szmodics in attack. Morsy captains the away side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

14:43

Kieran McKenna, similarly to O’Neil, will be disappointed with how the first period of the season has gone. Ipswich have won one of their 15 games so far, with their most recent result being a late loss at home to Bournemouth. They are currently 18th in the Premier League, and the only thing stopping them from being lower is the fact that they’ve managed to pick up six points from draws alone. Their team has shown glimpses of real quality, but they need to pick up another win soon to ease relegation fears.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

14:38

Gary O’Neil’s team started this Premier League campaign horribly, but he will be pleased that his side have shown a desire to win games and have been putting in somewhat impressive performances. They have won only two of their 15 games so far, with three draws under their belts as well. The consensus around Wolves is that they don’t deserve to be down in the bottom three, but with some questionable VAR decisions going against them and a manager on the brink of being sacked, the mood is low around the club.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

14:33

The last time these sides faced each other was in the EFL Cup, with Ipswich winning the encounter 3-2 in September 2023. The two sides had only met in the Championship before that match, with the last game being in 2018. Wolves have become a Premier League regular and have been in the top flight ever since then, whereas Ipswich have had a longer journey to be here today, as they returned to the peak of English football this season.
