New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart and her wife Marta Xargay received threatening homophobic anonymous emails after Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. The emails were sent directly to Xargay's account, causing concern for the couple. Stewart expressed that the level of closeness to the threats was unsettling, especially considering the safety of their children.

Stewart had a crucial opportunity to win Game 1 but missed key shots, leading to Minnesota's victory. Following the incident, Stewart informed the team about the emails, prompting an escalation to league security to ensure their safety.

Stewart emphasized that while engagement in the sport is appreciated, threats, harassment, or homophobic comments have no place in the WNBA. The New York Police Department confirmed receiving a report of aggravated harassment involving the emails, with the hate crimes task force investigating the matter.

Xargay filed a formal complaint with the police at the team's advice, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Stewart, usually shielded from such messages, chose to address the issue publicly to denounce such behavior and stress the importance of maintaining a respectful environment in sports.

This season has seen an increase in online threats towards players through social media and email. The WNBA spokesperson reiterated the league's stance against hateful or threatening comments and assured collaboration with security measures to address such incidents.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert condemned the attacks players face on social media and pledged to work with the players' union to combat the issue. She emphasized the need to support players dealing with such challenges and explore solutions, including technology and mental health resources.

As the WNBA Finals continue, the league remains vigilant in safeguarding its players and upholding a culture of respect and inclusivity within the sport.
