Wishaw repeat offender given chance to turn life around

A repeat offender who threatened his neighbours in Wishaw has been given a chance to turn his life around.

Edward Shannon was freed from jail to find a window at his home had been broken while he was serving his sentence.

He blamed neighbours and confronted a man with a plank of wood in the street.

Shannon, 33, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week. He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour in Moorfoot Drive on July 20.

The offence happened after he’d served an eight-month sentence for coughing at police officers and claiming to have Covid-19.

Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, said Shannon was annoyed after hearing that neighbours had used his driveway for a party while he was in jail.

When he found a window had been broken he went outside, picked up a plank of wood and began to shout and swear at other people in the street.

Ms McMillan told the court: “A neighbour left his home and tried to calm him down.

“Shannon, who was waving the piece of wood, squared up to the neighbour who didn’t rise to the challenge and returned to his home.

“Police arrived and the accused was hostile towards them. He also threatened to ‘torch everyone’s motors’.”

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Shannon believed, “rightly or wrongly”, that someone had broken his window.

The solicitor added: “He had been drinking and overreacted.

“He has impressed the social worker compiling a report for the court and has already spent a decent period in custody awaiting this case.”

Sheriff Thomas Millar noted that Shannon had served six months on remand.

He told the accused: “I’m prepared to make a 12-month supervision order that will give you assistance on your release.

“You must attend for addiction counselling as required.

“Hopefully we won’t see you back here.”
