Wishaw ready for Cambuslang Rangers cup test as boss reveals league frustrations

David Dunn reckons Wishaw would have finished in the top four this season but for a sticky patch in the middle of the campaign.

The Beltane Park boss took over from Mark Daly in December with the side sitting ninth in the table, but he managed to spark a surge in form that earned a fifth place finish in West of Scotland Conference C.

Dunn was the assistant manager during Daly's tenure and both believed the side were capable of showing more than they did during their bleak midwinter.

And with the league now at an end, Dunn is delighted with the response he got from the players since he took over but he feels the season could have delivered much more.

He said: "When I came in we were on a run of like one win in 14 games and we were ninth in the table, but the league form has been really pleasing since and the boys have been excellent.

"It's been good to see because I always believed in them.

"We underachieved for parts of the season because we have got a good squad. The boys know that themselves and the form we've shown in the last few months is what we are all about, so it's all positive looking to next season.

"We started very well and we ended very well, but there was that part in the middle where we were terrible.

"If we'd maybe picked up another few wins we could have been in the top four, where Mark and I believed we could take them.

"There are a lot of ifs and buts, however if you look at the position we were in when I started I'd have bitten the hand off you to be where we finished because we couldn't buy a win then.

"Every mistake was costing us a goal and we weren't taking chances."

The season isn't quite over, however, with a West of Scotland Cup clash away to Conference B champions Cambuslang Rangers to come this weekend.

Dunn added: "There's a lot of confidence in the boys now and they were looking forward to every game.

"The Cambuslang game will be tough but it's a chance to keep the season going.

"Whatever happens, all credit to the players for this season. They've bought into everything we've said since we came in and kicked on.

"We just need to make sure when the league starts back we get them going again."
