Wishaw man Duncan given prestigious award for 30 years of service to leading charity

A WISHAW man has been presented an award for 30 years of service to a leading charity – two decades after being given an MBE.

Duncan Gray MBE, was key in setting up Victim Support Scotland, which offers advice and support for those who have been affected by crime.

Duncan was awarded his MBE in 1996 by Prince Charles down in London whilst the Queen was on a Royal visit to Thailand.

However, the Wishaw man was thrilled at his latest award.

He said: “It feels great to be recognised as I’ve been involved for more than 30 years with Victim Support Scotland.

“I was delighted and I can’t believe how much we’ve managed to create and how many people we’ve helped in that time.

“ I am glad to know that Victim Support has grown so much and is supported by the government.

“The service would never have grown without the dedication of the volunteers and it is amazing how a small donation has ended up as a multi-million pound organisation.”

It was humble beginnings for Victim Support as they initially worked out of small premises on Wishaw Main Street.

However, they struck up a deal with local businesses which helped them move into an office in Brandon Street, Motherwell.

Thanks to support from communities and local authorities across the country, Victim Support has continued to grow.

Duncan added: “Unbeknownst to me I was recommended for an MBE by Victim Support and was supported in this by other voluntary organisations with which I was involved.

“However, seeing the work we have achieved at Victim Support is an even bigger achievement.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped the organisation out over the years.”
