Wishaw General staff receive bumper cheque from couple whose baby spent over 90 days in neonatal unit

Staff within the neonatal unit at University Hospital Wishaw were delighted to receive a bumper donation from a Lanarkshire couple.

Kirsty Black and her partner Kevin Allan, along with family members, raised an amazing £3,300 during a race night held in Carluke Masonic Hall.

The money raised for the neonatal team was a thank you for the care and support daughter Ayla, aged just seven months, received while being treated at the hospital.

Kirsty became pregnant with twins in December 2021. Both Ava and Ayla were born at 25 weeks, however, Kirsty and Kevin sadly lost Ava on January 2 at five days old.

Ayla was born on December 28 last year and was cared for in the neonatal unit and special care baby unit (SCBU) for a period of 93 days.

Kirsty said: “I would like to thank everyone in the maternity department, neonatal unit and the special care baby unit at University Hospital Wishaw for the care they provided to Ayla.

“The support they provided to both myself and my daughter was exceptional. Ayla was in the best of care and the nurses were amazing in looking after her as if she was one of their own.

“I’d also like to thank everyone who came along to the race night for the incredibly generous donations which will go towards helping other premature babies and their families who need specialist care like Ayla required when she was in hospital.”

Kate Boyle, senior midwife at the hospital, was delighted to be able to accept the cheque from Kirsty and members of the family.

She added: “This is a wonderful donation from Ava and Ayla’s family. It was our privilege to care for the family and for them to think of us is so kind.

“This generous donation will be used to help support other families in the neonatal unit who are going through the same experiences and we are so grateful for that.”
