Wirral to lose one MP as battle lines for next general election redrawn

Wirral would lose one MP in planned changes to Parliamentary constituencies across the country.

Proposals from the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) would see the number of seats in the Wirral reduced from four to three because of the number of voters in the area.

Wirral South, which is currently represented by Alison McGovern, could be divided into Wirral West and Ellesmere Port with most becoming part of Wirral West. Birkenhead and Wallasey will continue to exist though there will be some changes to the boundaries.

The BCE reviews boundaries based on public consultation feedback as well as factors like population changes.

The current and final consultation ends on December 5. Under the proposed rules, places like Heswall and Clatterbridge would become part of Wirral West which is currently represented by Margaret Greenwood.

Though the proposals, if approved, would lead to significant changes in terms of layout of MP constituencies on the Wirral, there might not be any change in political makeup in the near future.

Every Wirral MP is currently Labour and current polling averages put Labour 22% ahead of the Conservatives nationally but the addition of Clatterbridge and Heswall, two areas with Conservative councillors, could cut into Margaret Greenwood MP’s 2019 majority of 3,000.

The BCE said it did not want to propose a constituency that crossed the River Mersey because of big public opposition to similar plans in the past and this approach was supported by all qualifying political parties.

It proposes putting parts of Wirral into Cheshire instead with Ellesmere Port losing Neston and gaining Bromborough. Bromborough will still be part of Wirral Council for council elections.

Upton will now be split along the A5027 with the northern part of the village becoming part of Wallasey while the southern half including areas like Woodchurch will become part of Wirral West. Bebington will become part of the Birkenhead constituency.

The plans for Upton were opposed by more than 100 people with the Wirral West Labour party suggesting that Moreton West and Saughall Massie be split instead.

The BCE argued “the resulting constituencies would be unnecessarily disruptive of the existing configuration of constituencies on the Wirral” and is moving forward with its original plans.

The final recommendations will be put forward in June 2023 ahead of the next general election, expected in 2024.
