Summary
Winter storm Fern continued its journey across the country on Sunday, bringing record low temperatures and more snowfall than many cities in the Midwest and Southern US have seen in over a century. The storm made its way to the Northeast in the early hours of Sunday morning.
At least 20 states have declared a state of emergency including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
Seven total deaths have been reported from the winter storm. In New York City, the bodies of five people were found on the streets of NYC on Saturday as temperatures reached freezing lows. The Louisiana department of health also confirmed two deaths in Caddo parish.
The US surpassed 1 million power outages across the country as conditions continued to worsen. Tennessee is currently reporting by far the largest number of outages with more than 330,000 homes and businesses affected.
More than 10,000 flights have been canceled, with up to 15,000 cancellations possible through Monday. Today will go down in history as one of the days with the most weather-related flight cancellations in US aviation history.
New York City public schools will be closed on Monday due to the storm, mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Sunday morning. While all NYC public school buildings will be closed, instruction will continue remotely for students scheduled to attend school on Monday.
New York City subways will continue to operate throughout the storm, MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said Sunday. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, transit bus, light rail and Access Link services were stopped starting in the early hours of Sunday morning and rail service ended at 2pm today.
Sunday’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks was postponed, the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced this afternoon, explaining that the Mavericks team is unable to leave Dallas due to the storm.
Snow level totals in the Northeast US today continued to climb, reaching: 13 inches in Bridgeport, Connecticut; 12 inches in Ridgefield, New Jersey; 11 inches in the Bronx in New York City; and 15 inches in Midland in western Pennsylvania.
