Winter Paralympics: Team GB add two more bronze medals to Beijing tally

Team GB took their medal tally for the Beijing Winter Paralympics to five with bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s visually impaired super combined skiing.

First, Menna Fitzpatrick doubled her medal count in China with a third-placed finish before Neil Simpson, a gold medallist over the weekend, followed suit.

The 23-year-old Fitzpatrick had already won Super-G silver with new guide Gary Smith, with who she had teamed up after her regular guide tested positive for Covid.

The pair had been out of the medals in fifth in the opening leg of the super combined, the Super-G. But a blistering run in the slalom gave Fitzpatrick, who has just five per cent visibility, a second medal of the Games and the sixth of her Paralympic career.

After the bronze, Fitzpatrick said: “We left ourselves a bit of work to do in slalom and the plan paid off, of going out there and putting down a pretty decent run, so we are super, super happy.

“The confidence is really, really high - it was quite a tricky slalom set actually with tight turns and lots of combinations. It was tough but really good fun to smash it in the slalom.”

Teammate Millie Knight finished agonisingly just outside the medals in fourth place behind Fitzpatrick with guide Brett Wild.

Simpson and brother Andrew, like Fitzpatrick and Smith, had been fifth after the Super-G but clawed themselves into medal contention courtesy of a strong slalom run.

The result leaves Britain 10th in the medal table on day three of the Games with a gold, a silver and three bronze medals today.
