Winger enjoys post Rangers joy as he scores screamer to stun Eredivisie club after Ibrox exit

Glenn Middleton has provided a glimpse of his undoubted potential as he fired Dundee United to a superb 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in his first start since leaving Rangers.

The winger spent the last 18 months away from Ibrox on loan at St Johnstone and permanently brought the curtain down on his Rangers spell last month when signing a three-year deal at United. His first goal in Tangerine has saw him pick the ball up just inside the opposition half, beating two men, playing a one-two with Jamie McGrath and firing an outstanding curling effort into the bottom corner.

It secured a memorable 1-0 Europa Conference League third round qualifier first leg victory for head coach Jack Ross ahead of next week's second leg away at the Eredivisie club, with Middleton's new boss in no doubt over the winger's attributes. Speaking to Sportsound, Ross said: "I said he had the ability to produce moments like that and he did.

"I think where he's at in his career he needs a home. I worked with him previously and I enjoyed that and I think he enjoyed the short period we had together.

"I encourage players in that area of the pitch to be expressive and I think I've got a good record working with wide players.

"I'm really pleased he gets off to that start because that helps you with supporters, it helps you with confidence."
