Supermarket shoppers can help a campaign to remove more than a billion single-use plastic bottles from the world's oceans.
South Australia wine brand, The Hidden Sea, which launched in the UK last year, has pledged to remove and recycle the equivalent of 10 single use plastic bottles for every wine bottle sold. It aims to get one billion bottles recycled and removed by 2030 and has just hit the 10 million milestone.
Wines from The Hidden Sea hit UK supermarket shelves in 2021 and are stocked by Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Asda and Booths.
The Hidden Sea has partnered with ReSea Project, a Danish organisation committed to removing plastic from the ocean and recycling it, while also improving communities most directly affected by ocean waste and creating awareness about responsible waste handling.
It currently operates in Southeast Asia, which is a major recipient of plastic waste from countries around the world, including the UK.
Co-founded by Aussie Rules football star turned winemaker Richie Vandenberg, and eco-conscious entrepreneur Justin Moran, the brand’s Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rosé, Shiraz and Red Blend are now available to UK wine drinkers.
Justin Moran, co-founder of The Hidden Sea, said: “We are absolutely stoked to share the news that we have smashed the 10 million bottle milestone.
"The fact that we’ve taken so many plastic bottles out of the ocean in such a short time shows that shoppers want to make better choices and are actively seeking out progressive and eco-conscious brands.
“The incredible support of Brits since we launched earlier this year represents a massive stride towards our very clear goal; to remove single use plastic from the ocean.
"It’s vital that we act now to save the oceans, and The Hidden Sea enables consumers to play a part in this - by drinking delicious wine.”
