Wimbledon organisers have asked players to rein in maxing out their food allowances, it has been reported.
Those playing in this year’s championships, including tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, are given a £90 daily food allowance at the All England Tennis Club’s (AELTC) restaurants.
Coaches are given around half that amount, to spend on food and drink using accreditation tags that can be scanned.
Players can use their daily budgets at six places, including two restaurants, two sandwich bars and two coffee shops.
But there have been reports that some are maxing out their daily allowances, leading to concern that Wimbledon could run short of supplies, according to the Guardian.
The publication reported that one coach bought 27 probiotic yoghurt drinks in a bid to spend their full daily allowance, prompting the AELTC to email players and politely ask them to rein it in.
The email is believed to have asked competitors to be more “judicious” when spending their allowances.
This is thought to be in a bid to prevent potential food shortages as opposed to saving money, as meals have already been accounted for in event budgets.
The Australian Open ran a pilot scheme in which it offered unlimited food to players but this was scrapped by organisers after it was over-used.
The AELTC has been contacted for comment.
