William and Kate say Queen sent sign she was 'looking down on us' after she died

The new Prince of Wales shared a touching memory of what happened at Balmoral shortly after his grandmother, the Queen, died. Prince William revealed the details on his first official appearance with his wife since the state funeral and committal service on Monday.

The couple were thanking volunteers and operational staff who helped to organise the service that was held in the grounds of Windsor Castle..

Speaking to the group, William shared a touching moment that happened shortly after the Queen died and while members of her family were still at the estate.

He explained that he had seen five rainbows over Balmoral, and Kate added: "Her Majesty was looking down on us."

The Queen had been staying at her Scottish home, but her health deteriorated on September 8, two days after she had met new Prime Minister Liz Truss to invite her to form a government.

Her children, King Charles and Princess Anne, were are her side when she died, while William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, Sophie Wessex and Prince Harry arrived afterwards.

Shortly after the Queen died, a double rainbow appeared over Buckingham Palace as members of the public gathered outside to pay their respects. People among the thousand-strong crowd outside the Palace gates in central London turned round to take pictures of the rainbow that appeared after a heavy downpour.

The late monarch was interred in the King George VI memorial chapel alongside her husband Prince Philip, her father, King George VI, the Queen Mother and sister Princess Margaret.

Following her burial, the ledger stone was updated to reflect that the Queen and Prince Philip now laid in rest there; the Duke of Edinburgh was previously interred in the Royal Vault.

The full stone now reads: "George VI 1895-1952," followed by "Elizabeth 1900-2002." There is then a metal garter star before the final two names: "Elizabeth II 1926-2022" and "Philip 1921-2021."

Although Margaret is buried alongside her family, her name doesn't feature on the ledger stone as her ashes are interred inside the wall.
