Will there be a season 2 of Hijack? Idris Elba drama ends on a high

This article contains spoilers about Hijack

He was the calm, collected string-puller aboard the seemingly doomed hijacked flight, and now fans are hankering after more Idris Elba on their TV screens.

The Apple TV action thriller has released the finale today (Wednesday, August 2) and many are wondering if there will be a second series.

Hijack certainly delivered in the drama stakes, with one episode being released every week which kept viewers guessing and worrying whether the plane would land safely in London from Dubai.

The Elba-led series showed the hijacking in ‘real time’ each week, with a bunch of twists and turns about the seemingly high-powered hijackers and their reasons for taking over the plane and threatening the UK Government.

Every episode finished on a cliffhanger and today, the fate of the hijacked plane is discovered.

And the real reason for the hijacking is soon revealed in the tense finale, as well as the links to the organised crime organisation who were pulling the strings.

But will it end there? Here is everything we know about the possibility of a second series of Hijack.

Will there be a second series of Hijack?

The series finale answers all questions raised so there is nothing left that needs clearing up with a second series.

However, the popularity of the series could lead to producers wanting to capitalise on the success.

Producers have not confirmed or denied anything about the future of the project but lead actor and executive producer Elba has said that he would love to return to his character of negotiating hero Sam Nelson.

Chatting to Variety about the possibility of his character returning, Elba said: “What would be the acceptable scenario that he comes back? Because we’ve thought about this and obviously Apple have gone, ‘Well, we really love the show.’ And I think, you know, Rotten Tomatoes is at 92 per cent at the moment, which is a good sign, but it’s kind of like — he’s not a cop — what would be the acceptable Sam Nelson return? And, if I’m honest, I’m not sure.”

Speaking of a return, he said: “I’d like that, but I just don’t want to put him on another hijack. I’m open to that character coming back. I think if people were compelled to like the character, then I’m in.

“It’s got to be clever, and we can see him make decisions that are impossible to make. And I think that’s going to be fun for the audience, but it has to be the right setup. So who knows? If the audience really wants it, it’s going to happen.”

Sounds promising, but fans will have to wait to find out more.
