Better Call Saul’s sixth season’s final episodes have finally arrived on Netflix and AMC in the USA.
It promises to answer some of the show’s most burning questions, including what will happen to Kim Wexler, one of the most important characters who is absent from the events of Breaking Bad.
As Better Call Saul is a prequel, it needs to bridge the gap between the two shows and bring Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, back to where we found him when the original series launched in 2008.
The Breaking-verse continues to expand and many fans are hoping Jimmy’s story continues in a seventh season.
Will there be a Better Call Saul season 7?
Sadly, season 6 part 2 is the final chapter in Saul Goodman’s epic saga.
There won’t be a season 7, as AMC and showrunner Vince Gilligan confirmed after the season of season 5.
Co-created by him and Peter Gould, the pair have understood the importance of sticking the landing for a long time.
In a bold prediction ahead of the season finale’s premiere, Vince told The Hollywood Reporter he though the final would be a “better ending” than Breaking Bad.
He explained: “Let me make a prediction right now, I’m going to say this because Peter [Gould] is too much of a gentleman and way too modest.
“I think this show is absolutely, under Peter’s leadership, going to stick the landing.
“It’s going to be awesome and the Hollywood Reporter and other wonderful journalistic outlets are going to be having articles about which one had the better ending, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and I bet you folks are going to say Better Call Saul.”
Later, in conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Peter teased an “upsetting” end.
He said: "Whipsaw, rug-pulling, there's even some gaslighting. It's also devastating. Upsetting.”
Will there be a Better Call Saul spin-off?
Just because Better Call Saul is ending, that doesn't mean the Breaking Bad universe has to come to a close.
In fact, AMC clearly doesn’t want this to be the case, as Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios at AMC Networks, shared his hopes that it would continue.
Speaking to Variety, he said: “I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to continue on in this universe, I would do it.
“I think you’d have to ask them, but the door is always open and I long for the day my phone rings and Vince, Peter or our friends at Sony call to say, ‘Hey, I think we have another show set in this universe.’”
Currently, there have been no official announcements, but some potential projects have been teased.
Rhea Seehorn has addressed speculation about a Kim Wexler spin-off, with her open to exploring her character further.
She said to Deadline: "You know, Peter and Vince have said publicly that though they feel that there are stories, mine included, that are worthwhile to continue to tell, that they do want to step away from this franchise for a beat.
“So that’s all I can say about that. You’d have to ask them for specifics beyond that.
“Nobody is being coy about anything, but I’m also very grateful that they and fans feel like there is an ellipse to who Kim is and who Kim was."
The doors seems fully open to go in any direction, as Peter told Metro that any character could potentially get their own series.
He said: “Every single one of these characters could have a whole show. There’s no question. I mean, Kim Wexler, Mike Ehrmantraut, Hank Schrader.
“I could see the Hank Shrader show, absolutely. But we’ll just have to see what happens. Right now. I think we’re going to give it a little rest.”
Since 2008 and the premiere of Breaking Bad, the showrunners have been working on that universe non-stop, including the film sequel El Camino.
It seems they have definitely earned a break now that Better Call Saul is coming to an end.
