Wilfried Gnonto on how leaving home at 16 has helped him thrive at Leeds United

Wilfried Gnonto says leaving Italy for Switzerland at the age of 16 has made it easier for him to adapt to life at Leeds United.

The Italian international spent his primitive years with Inter Milan's youth academy before joining FC Zurich on a free transfer in 2020.

He scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 74 appearances in all competitions during his two seasons in Switzerland, and won the league title last term.

In June 2022, Gnonto was presented with his international debut and became Italy's youngest ever goal scorer during their 5-2 defeat against Germany.

A move to Leeds followed and Gnonto has made a blistering start to life in the Premier League. He has found the net four times for the Whites so far, but admits that the squad are capable of doing a lot more.

"Yeah I think so [moving away at a young age has helped ease his transition to playing in England]," Gnonto told BBC Sport. "When I went to Switzerland it was difficult because I was 16 and I was a little bit scared as well.

"My family is always with me so I don't feel alone. I think this time was maybe easier because I just wanted to go and enjoy myself and I think the Premier League is the best place to do it."

"I have adapted well here and I feel at home. We know that we have a really good team. We have been unlucky in some moments. With this team, with these players, with this staff we can do a lot more."
