Wildfires Kill Two, Force More Than 100,000 to Flee Homes Across Western U.S. and Canada

TOPSHOT - Fire trucks and public security vehicles are seen in the foreground as red glowing flames and smoke rise from the Hughes Fire in Castaic in northwest Los Angeles County, California, on January 22, 2025. A new wildfire erupted north of Los Angeles on January 22, exploding in size and sparking thousands of evacuation orders in a region already staggering from the effects of huge blazes. Ferocious flames were devouring hillsides near Castaic Lake, spreading rapidly to cover 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) in just over two hours. Fire crews across the western United States and Canada spent the weekend racing to protect entire towns as wind-driven wildfires forced more than 100,000 people from their homes and left at least two people dead. The most severe emergency unfolded in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, where the fast-growing Bald Range fire forced the entire evacuation of Summerland and killed an elderly resident, even as firefighters in eastern Washington neared full containment on fires that had already leveled hundreds of homes near Spokane. Meanwhile, a heat wave fed a cluster of new blazes across California, including one that claimed a life in the Sierra foothills.
