Wild scenes see players and coaches empty benches as Italy stun South Africa at U-20s World Championships

Italy have stunned hosts South Africa at the U-20s World Championship by triumphing them 34-26 in Paarl.

An early penalty try, and a converted score from Nicholas Gasperini set the Azzurri on their way, with Simone Brisighella securing a further three points with a well-taken penalty.

The Springboks responded with tries from Katlego Letebele Jurenzo Julius, but a second-half double from Marcos Gallorini kept Italy in control.

Damian Markus and Juann Else both crossed the whitewash for South Africa to set up a nervy finish, but Giovanni Sante's penalty six minutes from time proved enough to seal the win for Italy, sparking wild celebrations at full time.

Players and staff on the bench, and those on the field were visibly overjoyed when the final whistle blew, on what was a historic night for Italian rugby.

It's the first time Italy have triumphed over the Springboks at this level, and boosts Italy's chances of progressing following a chastening 43-15 defeat at the hands of Argentina.

Italy now sit top of Pool B following this bonus point win, with Georgia easing to a 20-0 win over Argentina in the pool's other game.

The Italians take on Georgia in their final game of the pool on July 4.
