Wigan Warriors have expressed their support for Bevan French following his mother’s death – and say they will “waiting with open arms for his return”.
The Aussie full-back, who is currently back in his homeland after helping to care for his mother during her long battle with illness, has taken to Instagram to announce her passing.
French wrote: “for forever and more. Words can’t describe the gratitude I have for your sacrifice. Love you Ma. Until we meet again. R.I.P.”
The news raised fresh doubts about when French will return to Wigan with the new Super League season less than a month away.
There has been speculation in recent weeks that he could yet decide to remain in Australia amid links with a number of NRL clubs, including former side Parramatta Eels, due to his family situation.
Wigan executive director, Kris Radlinski said: “Some things in life are bigger than rugby.
“All our thoughts and prayers are with Bevan and his family at this time. His Wigan family will be waiting with open arms for his return, to care and protect him.”
After suffering a season-ending hamstring injury last year, French returned home to Australia in June to undergo his rehabilitation whilst looking after his mum, who was battling a long illness.
The player has been in constant dialogue with the Warriors' coaching staff to ensure he is as up-to-date with pre-season training possible, with French working on his own personalised programme Down Under.
A number of French’s peers in rugby league replied to his post on Instagram to express their sympathies and support.
Former Wigan half-back Jackson Hastings said: “Sending love brother. Beautiful lady.”
Current Warriors star Jai Field remarked: “Thinking of you and the family mate.”
Oliver Gildart, Sean O’Loughlin, Ollie Partington, Cade Cust, Morgan Smithies, Sam Powell, Jake Shorrocks, Kai Pearce-Paul and Zak Hardaker also replied to his post.
