Why we can now name teenage Bute Park murderer Dionne Timms-Williams

The youth defendant convicted of murdering a respected consultant psychiatrist in a Cardiff park can now be named as Dionne Timms-Williams.

The teenager, who was 16 years old at the time of the murder, took part in a vicious and brutal assault upon Dr Gary Jenkins in Bute Park on July 20 last year which left him unconscious, covered in blood, and partly exposed. He died two weeks later in hospital having sustained a blunt force head injury.

Witnesses told a trial at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court that Timms-Williams, 17, led the attack on Dr Jenkins and was described by a man who intervened in the attack as "f****** evil and sadistic". Go here to recap events as they happened in court and find out more about the case.

CCTV audio footage of the attack captured Timms-Williams shouting: "Money" at Dr Jenkins, calling him a "f****** pig, f****** d***", telling another attacker: "Hit him again Jo" and adding: " F****** c***, I don’t give a f***".

After the murder Timms-Williams coldly said: "Yeah I needed that...."

She was convicted of murder having originally pleaded guilty to manslaughter, robbery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm of a man who tried to intervene.

She is due to be sentenced on March 25 along with co-defendants Jason Edwards and Lee Strickland.

Throughout the trial Timms-Williams' identity was protected by a court order under Section 45 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 due to the defendant being under 18 years old and legally considered a juvenile.

This prevented the publication of her name, address, identity of school or educational establishment, place of work, or a still or moving image of her.

An application was made by WalesOnline prior to the beginning of the trial to be able to identify her fully during the proceedings but this was unsuccessful due to concerns for the defendant's welfare during the trial.

Once the guilty verdict had been delivered by the jury a second application was made by WalesOnline and other representatives of the media to revoke the Section 45 order.

Judge Daniel Williams acceded to this application due to the serious nature of the conviction.

The order would have ceased to have effect upon Timms-Williams upon her 18th birthday in August this year.
