Smart Trainer FAQs
What is a smart trainer?
Traditionally called turbo trainers, the smart part has been added over recent years to differentiate those trainers that are Bluetooth or Wifi enabled and those that are not. Older turbo trainers would use a more mechanical way of applying resistance also, versus modern smart units which use electromagnets or electric motors.
What are the different types of smart trainer?
There are two different types of smart trainers, direct-drive which sees riders replace the rear wheel with the trainer unit itself and you pedal directly through the unit, hence the name. There are also wheel-on smart trainers, where you quite literally place your rear wheel on a drum or cylinder.
Direct-drive units offer a higher degree of accuracy, making them great for Zwift and Rouvy, versus their Wheel-on counterparts which are generally more affordable.
Why cycle indoors?
There are many reasons to get involved in indoor cycling – like avoiding the worst of winter weather and the convenience of being able to just jump on for a session whenever you like. So having a smart trainer that is accurate, works consistently, and offers a reliable connection is vital to get the maximum benefit out of your pain cave sessions.
There are loads of smart trainers on the market and an ever-growing number of the best indoor training apps to ride on like Zwift, Wahoo X, BKOOL and Rouvy. Zwift dominates the market and continues to build on its offering with its recently launched smart bike – the Zwift Ride and Play controllers that offer a more immersive gameplay experience.
