Why Vuelta a Espana stage was abandoned with just 15km to go

  • Stage three of the Vuelta a España was officially cancelled with 15km remaining after heavy rain, severe hailstorms, and lightning risks created perilous conditions on the Pyrenean route towards Font Romeu.
  • Race leader Tadej Pogačar urged the peloton to slow down and pull off the road following the Col de Mont-Louis climb, leading riders to seek shelter in a nearby hotel while organisers evaluated the situation.
  • Race organisers declared that no stage winner or podium ceremony would take place, prioritising the overall safety of the cyclists due to hazardous ice and hail on the remaining descent and final climb.
  • The general classification standings remain unchanged from stage two, leaving Pogačar with a nine-second advantage over Wout van Aert, with Britain's Matthew Brennan a further second behind in third.
  • At the time the stage was abandoned, Mats Wenzel was leading as the sole survivor of a five-man breakaway, holding a slim 20-second lead over chaser Lorenzo Fortunato before the race was called off.
