Why Tottenham players will be wearing special edition shirts in Champions League vs Sporting

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to raise awareness for Tottenham Foodbank against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night by wearing special edition shirts for the clash.

A statement on Tottenham's official website read: "Our players will wear special edition shirts emblazoned with the Tottenham Foodbank logo during our UEFA Champions League match against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Wednesday 26 October (kick-off 8pm).

"Foodbanks provide emergency food and support to people living in poverty – currently a foodbank parcel is handed out every 13 seconds in the UK. Tottenham Foodbank provides emergency food parcels containing at least three days’ worth of nutritionally balanced meals to individuals and families within the community. In the last six months alone, there has been an 55 per cent increase in demand for their services.

"The Club is a long-term supporter of its local foodbanks, with an ongoing fundraising campaign delivered in partnership with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, enabling fans to make a donation by texting COYSFOODBANK plus an amount to 70085* (for example, text COYSFOODBANK 10 to donate £10)."

The campaign can be seen at every home match, as well as on Spurs' social media channels, with Tottenham Foodbank regularly holding matchday collections for fans to donate items to the nearby community sports centre. The club also makes an annual donation of items for local families living in crisis ahead of Christmas.

Speaking about the plan to wear a special edition shirt tonight, club captain and starting goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said: “To be able to wear the Tottenham Foodbank logo on the back of our shirts on the biggest of stages on Wednesday night is a huge show of support from the Club and its players to an organisation that delivers so much for local people most in need.

"We know our fans are huge supporters of the local foodbanks as well and, with an audience of millions watching us and seeing the shirt, we aim to raise even further awareness of this fantastic cause ahead of a tough winter ahead for so many.”

Following back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, Antonio Conte and his team need to bounce back with three points in the Champions League in order to get back on track after a difficult week. Top of Group D with two games remaining, the Lilywhites will secure their place in the competition's knockout phase if they beat Sporting in N17.
