The NBA’s new in-season tournament, set to debut in the 2023-24 season, was created to bring more meaning, money, and viewership to the first half of the season for the Boston Celtics and the rest of the league. And before you begin to fret about adding to such a long season, it addresses concerns about extending the season by integrating the tournament into the existing 82-game regular season.
Games in the tournament will count toward the standings and playoff seeding, too. It may also discourage tanking given the increased importance those early games will now have.
The tournament provides new opportunities for media rights holders as well, potentially increasing the value of future media rights deals.
