Leading up to the 2022 NFL draft, the buzz around the Green Bay Packers was all about replacing Davante Adams, which many expected to translate into spending one of their two first-round picks on a top wide receiver.
Instead, the Packers spent both of those selections on Georgia defenders, the second being defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt with the No. 28 overall pick.
Wyatt is an athletic, explosive defender who is an expert at shooting outside and penetrating laterally through offensive line. He quickly overwhelms blockers with an excellent first step off the snap, shoving and pushing past them before exploding through into the pocket. He’s an expert in the run game, floating along the offensive line’s direction before popping into the gap and slamming into the ball carrier. Wyatt was one of many Bulldog defenders to be selected in the first round this year, and it’s well deserved, given his incredible athleticism for his size.
Wyatt should have no problem breaking the starting lineup right away opposite Jarran Reed, as the Packers build one of the biggest and most athletic defensive lines in the NFL. NFC North teams should have more trouble running the ball on Green Bay moving forward.
