Why Marcelo Bielsa rejected Everton offer amid proposed Leeds United return following Marsch sacking

In what has been a season of ups-and-downs for Leeds United, this is certainly the lowest low. After manager Jesse Marsch was sacked this afternoon, many fans have called for a number of different candidates to be given the helm at Elland Road.

Someone needs to steer the ship in the right direction, and now that the American has been shown the door, some are calling for his predecessor to renter the fray.

Marcelo Bielsa spent four years as manager at Elland Road and help guide them back to the promised land of the Premier League, but following a season of similar turmoil, he too found himself leaving the club in February last year - and hasn't been in a job since then.

Having been linked with multiple jobs in the year between then and now, the 67-year-old came closest to joining relegation rivals Everton just a week ago but despite positive talks, the Toffees eventually went with their second-option of former Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

According to reports, one of the main reasons the negotiations broke down was because Bielsa is believed to have wanted multiple months to set up his squad and come in during the summer transfer window instead of immediately to save the club from relegation.

It's reported that the Argentinian even would've preferred to manage the Under-21s side at the club instead of the senior team before next season to familiarise himself with the youth players.

However, the Toffees rejected that proposal after they realised they'd need an immediate reaction from their side in order to stay in the Premier League for next season and opted to bring in Dyche.

With reports currently claiming that Bielsa's incredible return to Elland Road after Marsch's sacking is 'unlikely', there's no doubt that he'd be a fan favourite appointment who understands the club fully.
