Manchester United's pursuit of Burnley striker Wout Weghorst has come as a shock to those expecting a bigger name to be on their radar.
At 30-years-old and with just two goals in 20 appearances for Burnley last season, the Dutch striker – currently on loan at Besiktas – does not appear to fit the profile of the prolific forward United are looking for. But United's interest in 6ft 6in Weghorst must be viewed in its proper context. Were this the summer, he would not be under consideration by United boss Erik ten Hag.
Having spent around £250million last summer, Ten Hag was told by the United hierarchy there would be no significant funds to spend in the January transfer window, leaving loans as his only option, hence the move for Weghorst.
