Why Leeds United could face fierce rivals Manchester United twice in just five days

Leeds United could end up playing their historic rivals Manchester United twice in five days next month, evoking memories of the time the two sides meant three times in less than three weeks during the 1991/92 season.

The 'trilogy' of matches from that season has become infamous after the close matches combined with the close proximity of all three heating up the rivalry between the two sides that was to come throughout the rest of the 90's.

While the first match was a league match between first-placed Man United and second-placed Leeds which ended in a 1-1 draw, Alex Ferguson's side would win an FA Cup third-round match against the Whites 1-0 thanks to a fourth-minute goal from striker Mark Hughes.

The third and final match of the trilogy was a 3-1 win for the Red Devils at Elland Road in a league cup match, leaving despair amongst Whites supporters who would eventually get the last laugh though as their side lifted the final First Division trophy at the end of the season, just four points clear of United in second.

Both Leeds and Man United had one of their matches earlier in the season postponed due to the Queens' death last year, after a blanket ban of all sport following Her Majesty's passing.

That match is expected to be re-arranged for February 8, just four days before they're scheduled to meet again at Elland Road. However, that'll only happen if neither side requires a replay in the FA Cup fourth-round - a stage that Leeds still haven't managed to reach due to needing a replay to beat Cardiff City after their 2-2 draw at the weekend.

Fans of both teams went to social media and claimed they'll be thrashing the other, with one saying, "Love it when teams play twice in a short space of time - especially rivals. Leaves plenty of room for grudges to carry over."

Another tweeted: "Seems like 1991 again" while a third simply said: "We get to thrash them twice in 4 days, nice."
