Did you know the monarch does not need a driving licence? While the Royal family is known to benefit from a number of privileges, you might be amazed to learn this fact. But surprising as it may sound, it is true: certain members of the family can take to the road without a driving licence.
Speaking to The Mirror, a policy expert for the AA confirmed Royals enjoy special motoring privileges, not extended to the public. And the reason is all to do with the way that driving licences are issued. As Jack Cousens, the AA's head of roads policy, explained: "Driving licences are issued by His/Her Majesty’s Government under His/Her Majesty’s authority." Accordingly, the monarch "does not need a driving licence."

It is for this reason that Queen Elizabeth II did not need a driving licence during her reign - a well-publicised fact about the monarch, who was known for her love of motoring.
But that is not to say "Princess Auto Mechanic", as Her Majesty was nicknamed in her youth, did not receive lessons.
"We are proud that the Queen learnt to drive with BSM, which is part of the AA," said Mr Cousens.
Following his accession to the throne, King Charles III no longer requires a driving licence. Now, he is the only person in the UK who can drive without one.
"As King he does not need a licence," the expert confirmed.
However, he would have needed one prior to becoming King because the rule does not extend to the whole of the Royal Family.
Mr Cousens explained: "Only the Monarch receives this privilege so all other Royals would need a driving licence."
He added that the entitlement does not extend to Camilla, as "the Queen Consort still needs a licence to drive."
The lack of need of a driving licence is not the only motoring privilege enjoyed by monarchs, however.
"The Monarch will use predominantly use State Vehicles and these do not require number plates," said Mr Cousens. "Similar to licences, number plates are issued by His/Her Majesty’s Government under His/Her Majesty’s authority."
