Why Jurgen Klopp is not expecting a Liverpool repeat of 'freak' Crystal Palace incident

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he's not expecting another 'freak' result when he takes his side to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace this Sunday.

The Reds came away 7-0 winners from their trip to south London last season, with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scoring twice each as the visitors ran riot over Roy Hodgson's Eagles side.

Liverpool have beaten Palace once already this season after winning the reverse fixture at Anfield 3-0, but Klopp reckons their clash at Selhurst on Sunday will be a much tighter affair.

"That was a one-off," said the German of his side's thumping win at Selhurst last season. "It's like a freak of nature - these things don't happen usually.

"That day was incredible, we hit pretty much every shot. They had chances but we hit everything.

"We're not expecting [a repeat of] that game. They've changed and they've improved and they look like a real stable team now."

Klopp added that he admired the Palace forward line, citing Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew and Odsonne Edouard as key threats for the Eagles.

The German also praised the role that Chelsea loanee Conor Gallager has played this season from midfield, with the 21-year-old the club's top scorer this season with seven goals.

"I've always liked the front players at Crystal Palace, they have always been good," added the German.

"When [Andros] Townsend was still there, plus with Zaha, Benteke and Ayew and now Edouard and Gallagher who is supporting everybody on the pitch - he's a really lively boy.

"It's a really good Premier League team with a few unlucky results. Not that I've seen 20 games of theirs but I've seen a couple and thought games could've gone the other way when they lost or drew. We expect a really tough game."

Klopp also provided an injury update on his side ahead of the trip to London, with the manager saying the club "hope and pray" that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would be involved in the game.

The midfielder rolled his ankle shortly after scoring against Brentford at Anfield last week and missed Liverpool's Carabao Cup win over Arsenal on Thursday as a result.

Klopp confirmed he had been running on Thursday and said he was hoping Oxlade-Chamberlain could be involved in training on Friday.
