Why is NASA freezing atoms in Space? The answer could change future space missions

A tiny NASA laboratory orbiting Earth is changing how scientists understand the universe. The upgraded NASA Cold Atom Lab aboard the International Space Station is cooling atoms to temperatures near absolute zero, creating a strange quantum state where matter behaves less like particles and more like waves. This breakthrough could influence the future of space navigation, precision science, and even the way spacecraft explore deep space.

The minifridge-sized facility, floating about 400 kilometers above Earth, is helping researchers study atoms in conditions impossible to perfectly recreate on the ground. At these extreme temperatures, atoms enter a state called a Bose-Einstein condensate, often described as a fifth state of matter.
