Why is King Charles visiting Scotland as 'second coronation' celebrations commence

King Charles is visiting Scotland this week as celebrations take place in order to honour the new British sovereign.

A series of spectacular events are set to take place during the monarch's visit, as King Charles travels north of the border with his wife Queen Camilla. Scotland's annual royal week began on Monday when King Charles III was greeted by crowds in Boness, Falkirk before heading to Edinburgh for a special week of events.

But what is the reason for the King and Queen's visit? Here is everything you need to know about the royal celebrations taking place in Scotland this week.

Why is King Charles visiting Scotland?

King Charles III, alongside Queen Camilla, arrive in Scotland this week for the monarch's 'second Coronation' celebration.

The week long visit, called 'Royal Week' in Scotland, will be Charles' first as King, with a number of special celebrations and engagements to honour the new monarch.

The week always begins on the grounds of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, with the Ceremony of the Keys. During the special ceremony in Edinburgh, the King is presented with the keys to the capital.

Another ceremony, named Investiture, takes place later in the week. During this events, awards are handed out - similar to OBEs and MBEs.

Recipients of these awards include those judged to have contributed something exceptional to society.

There is also an annual garden party, with thousands of people from across Scotland invited to have tea with the King in the grounds of the palace.

There is also sometimes a Thistle Service at St Giles' Cathedral where people are awarded the Ancient Order of the Thistle. This award recognises 16 people in Scotland who have done incredible things for the country.

Where and when is King Charles visiting?

The King made his way north of the border on Monday where he was greeted by crowds in Bo'ness.

The monarch met with Bo'ness Fair Queen, Lexi Scotland, alongside May Garrow, 99, who won the title back iin 1936.

The King also headed to Kinneil House on the outskirts of the town to meet with Sustainable Thinking Scotland, an organisation growing sustainable food give in food parcels to those in need.

King Charles then headed to Edinburgh, taking part in the Ceremony of the Keys on the Palace of Holyroodhouse forecourt before joining former Royal Yacht Britannia sailors in reviving an old navy tradition at the Leith docks.

An official service will take place at St Giles' on Wednesday, where there will be a royal procession along the Royal Mile in the capital.

There will also be a people's procession, consisting of around 100 Scots representing different aspects of Scottish life.

During the ceremony, where the Stone of Destiny will be present, the King will be presented with the Honours of Scotland, with a gun salute taking place at Edinburgh Castle afterwards.

There will also be celebration in the sky as the Red Arrow fly above the capital following the ceremony.

What are the Honours of Scotland and what will King Charles receive?

This week's royal visit to Scotland will be filled with celebrations as King Charles arrives in Edinburgh for the first time since being officially crowned.

The monarch will be presented with a new sword as the receives Scotland's crown jewels at the special ceremony in the capital.

The King will be presented with the Honours of Scotland during a service at St Giles' Cathedral on Wednesday, July 5.

The Elizabeth sword, named after the King's late mother Queen Elizabeth II, was commissioned as the existing 16th century sword is too fragile to handle.

The Honours of Scotland include the crown, sceptre and sword of state and are the oldest crown jewels in the UK.

New monarchs are traditionally presented with the Honours following their coronation, with King Charles presented with the crown jewels during the Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication at St Giles.

The Stone of Destiny will also be present during the special ceremony after playing an important part in the King's Coronation at Westminster Abbey in May.

Official visits like this one traditionally happen each year, with the monarch spending a week based at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The visit is know as Holyrood Week or Royal Week in Scotland.
