'Why is it the worst people rise to the highest office?' Welsh MP attacks Boris Johnson

A Welsh MP became embroiled in an angry exchange with Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he taunted her about comments she made about the EU and she accused him of being one of "the worst people".

In a PMQs which saw the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer attack the Tory leader over the UK's poor economic performance compared to other developed nations, Boris Johnson was also criticised by one the Welsh MPs. Anna McMorrin who represents Cardiff North challenged the PM over the cost of living crisis.

As part of her question the Labour MP quoted Mr Johnson's own cost of living tsar Cavid Buttress saying: "'Why is it that the worst people often rise to the highest office and stay there?' Not my words about the Prime Minister but those of his newest appointment - his cost of living tsar.

Anna McMorrin questions the PM in the House of Commons (UK Parliament)

"Families across Cardiff North crippled with sky rocketing bills unable to afford even the most basic necessities, all agree with him saying that this Prime Minister has to go! So if even his own tsar doesn't have faith in him tell me why those struggling should. "

The Prime Minister adopted his favourite tactic during PMQs and just returned to talking about the EU and Brexit. "Mr Speaker she has asked that question repeatedly," he said. "Let me remind her that this is a government that gets on an delivers our promises to the people and in particular getting Brexit done. I read the other day Mr Speaker that she want to go back into the single market and the customs union. If that is the real policy of the Labour party, going back in the EU, then why won't the leader of the opposition admit it?"

Her comments about rejoining the single market emerged in the Sun newspaper which obtained footage of Ms McMorrin answering questions from supporters last week in which she said: "We need to renegotiate the deal, certainly... I hope, eventually that, we will get back into the single market and customs union, and who knows then". The comments led to her being rebuked by the party leader. A party spokesman said Anna McMorrin, a shadow justice minister, had been spoken to by Sir Keir Starmer.

In a bizarre series of exchanges earlier in chamber the Labour leader labelled a "deluded" Boris Johnson "Jabba the Hutt" and a "gameplaying" Love Island contestant. The Labour leader accused Mr Johnson of trying to "perform Jedi mind tricks on the country" with his boasts about the economy but added "the force just isn't with him any more". He claimed the PM "thinks he's Obi-Wan Kenobi, the truth is he's Jabba the Hutt", referencing a slug-like Star Wars baddie.
