Liverpool have broke the bank to bring Darwin Nunez to Merseyside but the story could have been completely different had he thrown the towel in like he nearly did when still a teenager.
The 22-year-old has undertaken a medical after agreeing terms to become Jurgen Klopp's major summer signing, with an official unveiling expected imminently, but an interview with his former youth team coach Jose Perdomo reveals that a serious knee injury gave a 17-year-old Nunez serious doubts over whether he would make it at all.
Speaking to the Mail, former Uruguayan international Perdomo explained how he scouted Nunez at an U13s tournament in the small town of Artigas on the Uruguay/Brazil border and asked to take him to Montevideo, 400 miles away, to play for Penarol, where Nunez' brother Junior was already trying to establish himself.
