A retired surgeon is pursuing the dream of a career in music he put on hold for 40 years.
Tim Camrose, 60, is a singer-songwriter based in Wilmslow. He was a keen musician growing up in London, however when he left home to study and pursue a career in medicine he gave up music for the next four decades.
Throughout all this time, while working as a consultant and surgeon, including at a hospital in Manchester, Tim continued to have songs going round his head; he says every time he would go on a long flight or drive, tunes and lyrics would come to him.

Although Tim found his career as a consultant surgeon and university professor hugely rewarding, his song writing spirit never left. He retired as a surgeon last year and began playing the piano again. Tim is now finally pursuing this long-held ambition to write, record and perform his own songs.
He has compiled them into his debut album ‘Half of My Life’ – released in 2022 - with videos of songs from the album, ‘This Is Chicago’, ‘A Storm Coming’ and ‘Back to New York City’, recorded live at the iconic Manchester music venue, Band on the Wall.
Some songs are highly personal. ‘Didn’t Say’ is dedicated to Tim’s parents, who both died when he was in his 20s and one song is also very special to Tim because as a surgeon he looked after many young people who had been made homeless.
He says he wrote the song ‘Somewhere Out There in the Dark’ one afternoon. It’s about young homeless, who, as the lyrics say, ‘don’t want pity, just a chance to show the world what they can do’.
He says: "I looked after a number of people who had been homeless and had been injured on the street and I did their surgery. Over the course of a long career I looked after several people who had been homeless and had been harmed.
"It was great to see them get their lives back together."
Aware he is older than most pop singers starting out, Tim says he isn't going to let age hold him back as he gears up for open mic nights around Manchester.
"It's a lot of hard work but it is a new challenge that I have given myself," he says. "I am going to really challenge myself and just sing my heart out."
