Why Gary Lineker is missing today's Match of the Day as BBC confirm replacement

Gary Lineker will miss presenting Match of the Day on BBC today after a bad cold has made his voice deteriorate over night.

The former England international has been in the news of late as it seemed he may be stepping down from his role as Match of the Day host due to expressing his views on Twitter.

Lineker was forced to step aside from his role on the BBC’s flagship Premier League highlights programme following his comments about the Government's controversial new policy on asylum seekers. The decision led to several pundits and commentators announcing they would not work on the programme as a show of solidarity for their colleague.

Having made his return to presenting for the broadcaster yesterday though, Lineker will be missing from today's coverage.

Ex-England Women's right-back Alex Scott will take the reigns in place of the stricken Lineker for the FA Cup quarter-final tie between Brighton & Hove Albion and Grimsby Town.

The BBC took to their Twitter account to post this update on their coverage: "Due to illness, we've got a line-up change for today's live FA Cup coverage of Brighton v Grimsby on BBC One.

"As viewers will have noticed yesterday, Gary Lineker was struggling with his voice and unfortunately it has deteriorated overnight. Alex Scott will be hosting instead."

Lineker confirmed the news soon after, while also poking fun at his recent absence from the BBC, tweeting: "I’ve been silenced…. literally, by a nasty cold so, annoyingly, won’t be working at @OfficialBHAFC this afternoon."

Lineker returned to hosting duties on Saturday when Manchester City beat Championship runaway leaders Burnley 6-0 in the FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium.
